A battle between a pair of singles stars and the joint No. 1s in the PIF ATP Doubles Rankings will headline the quarter-finals at Roland Garros.
Top 50 singles players Tomas Machac and Zhang Zhizhen continued their impressive 2024 as a team by defeating eighth seeds Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni 6-3, 7-5 on Tuesday at the clay-court major. The Czech-Chinese pair converted three of four break points it earned, according to Infosys Stats, en route to an 83-minute third-round triumph on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.
Machac and Zhang kicked off their fledgling doubles partnership by reaching the semi-finals at January’s Australian Open. They have played two ATP Tour events together since: They won an indoor ATP 250 title in February in Marseille, before reaching the semi-finals on clay at the Barcelona ATP 500. The duo is now 15-2 for the season and up to 11th in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings, which determines qualification for the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals.
The pair Machac and Zhang defeated in the Barcelona quarter-finals was Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos. The teams will meet for their second Lexus ATP Head2Head clash in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros, where World No. 1s Granollers and Zeballos are seeking to add a maiden major crown to the nine ATP Tour trophies they have won together.
