Christian Harrison and Evan King continued their strong start to the season by upsetting third seeds Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 6-3, 6-7(5), 10-6 on Monday at the Miami Open presented by Itau, where the Americans are into the quarter-finals.
Having already claimed two ATP 500 titles in Dallas and Acapulco this year, Harrison and King are up to No. 4 in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings. They will next take on fifth seeds Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus.
Second seeds Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten also advanced to the last eight, continuing their quest to claim a maiden ATP Masters 1000 title. They delivered an assured display to see off Joran Vliegen and Jackson Withrow 7-6(5), 6-4.
Heliovaara and Patten dropped just four points behind their first serves in the opening set, according to Infosys ATP Stats, before coming alive in the tie-break and earning a crucial double-break lead in the second.
With its 87-minute victory, the Finnish-British duo improved to 16-5 on the season, having clinched their second major trophy at the Australian Open in January. Awaiting in the quarter-finals are Sebastian Korda and Jordan Thompson, who reached the championship match in Indian Wells.
Top seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic remained on track to complete the coveted ‘Sunshine Double’ by overcoming Matthew Ebden and John Peers 6-3, 3-6, 10-7. Last year’s ATP Year-End No. 1 Doubles team presented by PIF honours claimed its first title of the season in Indian Wells last week, and has now extended its win streak to seven matches.
In the quarter-finals, Arevalo and Pavic will face seventh seeds Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni, who emerged victorious in their only previous Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting in the Barcelona semi-finals last year.
Yuki Bhambri and Nuno Borges ousted Jamie Murray and Adam Pavlasek 7-6(4), 6-2. Bhambri and Borges next face sixth seeds Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool.
