Career
Began playing tennis at age 6.
Played almost exclusively on hard courts until his teenage years
Began taking tennis more seriously at age 15 and moved to Barcelona to train at Real Club de Tenis Barcelona.
Father, Alfonso, is an architect; mother, Maria Antonia, is a doctor; sisters, Lucia and Alicia.
Idols growing up were countrymen Juan Carlos Ferrero and David Ferrer. Dream opponent is Ferrero.
Favourite surface is clay and shot is backhand.
Named 2013 ATP Most Improved Player of the Year (voted by players).
Credits playing doubles as key to maintaining his overall tennis level.
Supports Sporting de Gijon football team.
Underwent back surgery in June 2012 and missed 7 months with herniated disc.
Missed 6 weeks in 2017 with abdominal fracture and 10 weeks in 2019 with right shoulder injury.

Reached US Open SF and Roland Garros QF in both 2017 and 2020, as well as 2016 US Open doubles final with countryman Garcia-Lopez.
Member of 2019 Davis Cup championship team and helped Team Spain reach ATP Cup finals in 2020 (5-1 in doubles) and 2022 (4-1 in singles).
