Only child to mother, Virginia, and father, Paolo, who is a former Portuguese national champion in volleyball.
Began playing tennis at age 6 with his family at a club in their hometown of Maia. Also liked to swim, but dedicated more time to tennis.
Played college tennis at Mississippi State University for 4 years (2016-19), earning a degree in kinesiology and reaching 2019 NCAA singles final.
Favourite tournament is Estoril.
Idol growing up was Roger Federer: "Roger has been my one and only since the early days. Just learning how to be a professional, competing and playing matches, you really value what he does on court. How you stay calm and positive during crazy points."
Best advice received: "My coach Rui Machado told me that you don't win when you want to, you win when you're able to do it. It sounds better in Portuguese: Não é quando queres, é quando consegues. Sometimes you can feel great in a match, the conditions are great and everything is aligned for you to win, but somehow you don't. And when you least expect it, you're able to do it."
Favourite sports team is Portuguese football club FC Porto.
Enjoys listening to Coldplay.
Biggest passion outside tennis is sightseeing and travel.
Perfect day without tennis is relaxing at home and going to the nearby zoo in Maia.
Diagnosed as partially deaf in left ear.
Underwent left wrist surgery in 2019.

Became 2nd Portuguese man to break inside Top 50 in PIF ATP Rankings history (since 1973), reaching career-high No. 30 in September 2024 after saving 3 MPs vs. Mensik to reach US Open 4R.
Captured 1st ATP Tour title at 2024 Bastad by joining Djokovic, Federer, Murray and Zeballos as only men to defeat Rafael Nadal in an ATP Tour final on clay.
Defeated No. 13 Dimitrov for biggest win of career to reach 1st Grand Slam 4R at 2024 Australian Open, becoming the 1st Portuguese in 4R in tournament history.
Advanced to 10 Challenger finals, winning titles at 2021 Antalya-3, 2022 Barletta, 2023 Monterrey, 2023-24 Phoenix and 2023 Maia in his hometown.
Five-time All-American during 4-year college career at Mississippi State University, posting 31-match win streak that ended in his last match (l. to Jubb in 2019 NCAA singles final).
