Jim Courier has experienced almost everything one could in the tennis world. The American climbed to No. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings and won 23 tour-level titles, while he has also served as a commentator, on-court interviewer and more.
His most recent role came as an expert for Netflix’s hit tennis series Break Point. ATPTour.com looks at some of his notable moments in Season 2.
View of the Australian Open
Few understand what it takes to perform well at the Australian Open like Courier, who won back-to-back titles at the season’s first major in 1992 and 1993. He explained what is special about the event, where today he is a commentator and on-court interviewer.
“The thing that’s great about arriving in Australia is everyone is optimistic,” Courier said. “Everyone’s coming in fresh and ready and hungry. It’s a blank slate.”
The Fame Of Break Point
Courier had plenty of attention on him when he was a player — it came with the territory of reaching World No. 1. But the American explained the caution necessary for those under the Break Point spotlight.
“Having cameras follow you around is a big deal,” Courier said. “There has to be a part of these players that wants to put on their best face and present well for everyone. But if you’re distracted, you might not perform at your best.”
The Target On Fritz’s Back
Two episodes of Season 2 focussed on the battle for American No. 1. Courier warned that while Taylor Fritz holds the position, it almost puts a target on his back in that others want his spot.
“To be the No. 1 American is an awesome feeling and serious badge of honour. It puts you up into a different level,” Courier said. “But Taylor’s got to be mindful of what’s behind him as well. Everyone wants that position.”
Jim’s Connection To Tommy Paul
One of the new Break Point stars is Tommy Paul, who is coached by Brad Stine, who worked with Courier for multiple stints. One of those stints came before Paul was born.
“Brad Stine was my coach and he took me from 25 in the rankings to 2 in the rankings in 52 weeks,” Courier said. “Brad is a no-nonsense guy. Tommy is an immense talent. He just didn’t have direction. He needed some help and he found the right guy.”
Coco’s Breakthrough
One of the major storylines of 2023 was Coco Gauff’s surge during the American summer, capped with her run to the US Open title. Courier helped put her victory into context.
“Given Serena’s swan song the year before, for Coco to come in and fill that void, it really is like a fairy tale,” he said.
