Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz, Karen Khachanov, Casper Ruud and Ben Shelton are more than aware of the legacies of some of the ATP Tour’s past greats.
They each sat down with ATP Uncovered to build their ultimate champion using attributes only from previous winners of the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals. Despite none of them having competed against him, all five selected the serve of the same American legend.
Two of the quintet's more recent rivals, Roger Federer and record seven-time Nitto ATP Finals titlist Novak Djokovic, were also unanimous choices in two other respective categories — forehand and backhand. Khachanov later light-heartedly acknowledged he could have selected current World No. 1 Djokovic in every category!
The Swiss great Federer’s skills at the net were also a popular choice, but faced stiff competition from another giant of the game whose volleying prowess was as renowned as his on-court energy…
“Still today, he has such good hands, such good volleys,” said Auger-Aliassime of the net master, who won the Nitto ATP Finals crown in 1978, 1983 and 1984.
